A concealed leak often begins quietly. Look for persistent damp patches, paint that bubbles or peels, a musty smell, unexplained mould, or a water meter that moves when all taps are closed. Do not assume a wall stain is only rainwater or condensation: a slow pipe leak can damage plaster, wiring, and neighbouring rooms over time.

Avoid breaking tiles or walls before the source is identified. A plumber can isolate sections, check pressure, trace the affected line, and recommend the least disruptive repair. Turn off the relevant water supply if water is spreading rapidly, and keep electrical outlets near the damp area unused until they are checked. An upfront inspection is usually far cheaper than allowing a hidden leak to continue.

Reduce damage before help arrives

If water is visibly spreading, isolate the nearest supply valve or the main water line if you know it safely. Photograph the affected wall or ceiling and note whether the problem worsens when a particular bathroom, kitchen, or water motor is used. This helps trace the line without unnecessary demolition.
